Kin Will Reveal a Much-Hyped Rebrand Tomorrow

Kin has been hyping a rebrand countdown for the past week, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited.

Moving to r/kin

Last month the moderators of r/KinFoundation revealed that they acquired the r/kin subreddit and would be migrating the community over the coming weeks.

A few days later, Jesse Cecchetto (Marketing Communications Lead at the Kin Foundation) began posting a series of cryptic countdown messages in the new r/kin subreddit.

You spend your time online. But what can you spend for your time online?

Since 2017 when Kin initially launched on the Ethereum blockchain, the vision has always been about creating a better monetization relationship between app creators and their users. The above message seems rooted in that initial idea.

The developers of Kin have delivered a plethora of SDKs for a wide array of programming languages and environments. This allows developers to seamlessly integrate Kin into their applications. Everything from iOS & Android to web technologies like Python, Go, and Node are covered by an SDK with online tutorials.

This countdown message included a censored white logo on a purple coin in the top right corner. It’s not clear what this logo represents, but it looks a bit like the traditional Kin “K” graphic.

Like the 7-day message that kicked off the countdown, this message seems to describe a monetization strategy for apps where the users are not the product. Instead, they form a true digital community where both creators and users share value.

It’s worth mentioning that there are over 7.6 million holders of kin on the Solana blockchain. This is far and away the most significant number of token holders on the chain, with the second-place token coming in at around 1.4 million holders.

I can’t say for sure, but this image and message hint at secure identity management or a single-sign-on solution. However, take that with a grain of salt until we know more.

For as long as I can remember, Kin has touted the “Win-Win” philosophy of the token, where both creators and users come out on top. This final message before tomorrow’s big reveal indicates that Kin will move away from this well-worn phrase toward something new.

So What is Kin, And Why Haven’t You Heard of It?

Kin began life in 2017 as an ERC-20 token, branded as “money for the digital world” as part of Kik Messenger’s strategy to compete with more prominent social networks.

Kin’s innovative Kin Rewards Engine is “designed to reward developers in the Kin Ecosystem for contributing value to the Kin Economy.” This is the heart and soul of Kin and is part of what sets it apart from other tokens in the space.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement division considered the 2017 ICO to have been an unregulated sale of securities. Kik fought the action, but ultimately the value of the coin dropped by 99% in the years of turmoil that ensued.

Kin Foundation & Solana

In the meantime, Kin spun off from Kik Messenger and formed the Kin Foundation. In the ensuing years, the Kin developers have migrated the coin (several times) towards faster and faster technologies that can handle the scale required to handle millions of users, eventually settling on the Solana blockchain.

I’ll update this post tomorrow with all the juicy details. In the meantime, for more information about Kin, check out https://kin.org/ and follow the conversation on Reddit.
